Can anything good come out of the Mississippi Delta?  If you are from the Mississippi Delta and you are reading this, then the answer is “You” and “Me!”  I was born and raised in Ruleville, Mississippi.  I attended the public schools here in Ruleville, and I can truly say that my years in public schools shaped me into the person I am today.  At the tender age of 17, I went off to college at Southern University and A & M College to major in English, Liberal Arts, and went on to Southern University Law Center to obtain my law degree.  While in high school, I took the more difficult classes because I knew that I wanted to leave Mississippi and I wanted to be able to compete with anyone anywhere when I went on to college.  I have to admit that when I was in high school, I did not have to study much.   However, when I went to college, I entered a totally new world. I was up most nights studying when my new friends were fast asleep.  Many of them had taken college courses in their high schools, but advanced maths such as Calculus I and II were foreign to me.  I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer when I began my tenure at Southern; however, what about those other students who came from small towns who wanted to be engineers, tech gurus, etc.?  Did they have to settle?  Were they intimidated by the more advanced math classes?   Were they afraid of the unknown and passed up majors in science, technology, engineering and math because they did not have a great foundation in those areas?   So many of our children shy away from something that they want to run to deep in their hearts.  They want to be the next Sheena Allen of Sheena Allen Apps (www.sheenaallenapps.com) or the next Dr. Reagan Flowers of C-STEM (www.drreaganflowers.com), but they don’t know how to get there. To those of you who are reading this, please encourage your children to be all that they can be, and if you are a child reading this, please pursue the career you have always dreamed about.  The road might be more difficult for you, but the rewards will be great.  We are here at Dorothy’s Legacy, Inc. to help you find your inner scientist, engineer, mathematician, etc.  If you are a student at Ruleville Central High, please know that you are destined to be great!  I sat in the same seats you are sitting in right now.  I walked the same halls you walk everyday, and you know what — I can assure you that you can live your dreams!  It doesn’t matter where you’re from or how much you have.  What matters is the drive and the will that is within your heart.  Until next time… continue to be great.  Believe in yourself, and remember that we are here to help.
