This Thanksgiving, we at Dorothy’s Legacy are thankful for the parents and grandparents of Ruleville, Mississippi who bring their children to our robotics camps every month and encourage their children to be their best.  This month’s robotics camp was awesome!  Last month, we hosted our first two groups of 5th and 6th graders, and this month, we hosted another group of 5th and 6th graders.  We are excited about the growth of the children who are attending the camps.  We had a total of 24 students who participated this month, and we are looking forward to next month’s camp, which will be with our 7th and 8th graders.  What is stunning is the parental involvement in getting their kids to camp.  Our first camp is early in the morning, and the older kids arrive later during the afternoon.  We have had children ride their bikes to get to camp when their parents were unable to bring them. We have had children bring a friend so that they can experience robotics and engineering as well.  We even get children running in from football practice so that they can spend time learning about robotics.  The drive and diligence are there, and we can feel it in each and every student who participates.

Last month, we FaceTimed the owner of a cybersecurity and biometrics firm, a NASA engineer who is working on a space shuttle, and an Information Technology Specialist.  This month, our children FaceTimed a chemical engineer who later went on to pursue a career in law and is currently a patent attorney for a law firm in Houston, Texas. Angelo, our robotics specialist, also spoke to the children about his experience as an engineer with NASA and his communication with the astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS).  Our children are able to see engineers who look like them.  They are encouraged, and when they leave these camps, they know the sky is the limit, no matter what anyone else says.  This is our goal — to give every child an opportunity and to let every child know that they have limitless potential.
